TREATMENT OPTIONS
OBESITY IS TREATABLE
There is no single treatment that is suitable for everyone. Effective obesity care should be individualised and based on a person’s health status, weight-related complications, treatment goals and preferences.
The goal of treatment is not simply weight loss. The goal is better health, improved quality of life and reduction of obesity-related complications.
LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION
Lifestyle modification remains the foundation of obesity management and may include:
* Healthy eating strategies
* Increased physical activity
* Behavioural modification
* Sleep optimisation
* Stress management
For some individuals, lifestyle intervention alone may be sufficient. For others, additional treatments may be required.
Modern obesity medications can help regulate appetite, improve satiety and support long-term weight management when used appropriately under medical supervision.
Medication may be considered for individuals who:
* Have obesity or overweight with weight-related complications
* Have not achieved sufficient results through lifestyle intervention alone
* Require additional support for long-term weight management
OBESITY MEDICATIONS
ENDOSCOPIC THERAPIES
Endoscopic procedures are minimally invasive treatments performed through the mouth without external incisions.
Examples include:
* Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)
* Intragastric balloons
These therapies may be suitable for selected individuals and should be discussed with appropriately trained healthcare professionals.
Metabolic and bariatric surgery is currently the most effective evidence-based treatment for severe obesity and obesity-related metabolic disease.
Examples include:
* Sleeve Gastrectomy
* Gastric Bypass
* One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB)
Surgery can result in significant and durable weight loss while improving or resolving conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and obstructive sleep apnoea in appropriately selected patients.
METABOLIC AND BARIATRIC SURGERY
MULTIDISCIPLINARY CARE
Successful obesity treatment often requires a team approach involving:
* Doctors
* Surgeons
* Dietitians
* Psychologists
* Nurses
* Exercise professionals
* Allied healthcare practitioners
The right treatment is the one that is safe, evidence-based and appropriate for the individual patient.
