UNDERSTANDING OBESITY

WHAT IS OBESITY?

Obesity is a chronic disease characterised by excess body fat that may impair health. It is associated with a wide range of medical conditions and can affect physical health, mental wellbeing, quality of life and life expectancy.

Contrary to popular belief, obesity is not simply the result of poor self-control or a lack of willpower. It is a complex disease influenced by genetics, biology, environment, lifestyle, medications, sleep, stress and socioeconomic factors.

According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2023, 54.4% of Malaysian adults are either overweight or living with obesity.
